Photographer: Takehito Miyatake
I chose this photo for a number of reasons. Shooting star trails is my most recently acquired passion when it comes to photography. It’s what immediately drew me to this photo. What makes it a great photo though is not just that it includes star trails but that it is composed very well. The volcano creates a very attractive color accent against the purple hued sky and the dark foreground. Also, even though Mr. Miyatake chose not to light paint the rock formation in the foreground it still provides some measure of balance to the over all photo. This photo was one in a set of many that Mr. Miyatake took to document natural phenomenon in Japan that most people don’t often get to see. He credits patience and a lack of sleep for being able to capture this award-winning photo.
